How To Make Oat Flour – Simple and Easy

Oat flour is so simple and easy to make. All your need is a food processor or coffee grinder, depending on how much you need, a few minutes of your time and….. you guessed it OATS.

What is oat flour?

Oat flour is flour made from finely ground oats. Many plant-based and gluten-free recipes call for oat flour as a main ingredient. Oats are naturally gluten-free, therefore the flour made from oats is naturally gluten-free. However, cross-contamination can occur in facilities that make regular flour that contains gluten. If you are gluten intolerant, you can use certified gluten-free oats to ensure no cross-contamination.

What oats to use?

When I make my oat flour I use organic rolled oats. You can certainly use quick-cooking oats and steel-cut oats if the recipe calls for such. I have only used rolled oats and quick-cooking oats to make oat flour.

What equipment do I need to make oat flour at home?

Well, that is an easy question to answer. All you need is a food processor or a coffee grinder. A food processor is great for making large batches of oat flour if you required that much or you are stocking up and prepping for the week.

Meanwhile, a coffee grinder is great for making small batches at a time. You can yield around 1 cup of oat flour using a coffee grinder.

My personal coffee grinder recommendation is the Hamilton Beach Electric Coffee Grinder, you can find the coffee grinder by clicking here.

I would not recommend something that I do not use myself. I can grind about 1/2 cup of rolled oats. The removable stainless steel chamber makes emptying and cleaning absolutely effortless.

Total Time 5 minutes mins

  • Food Processor for large batches

  • Coffee Grinder for small batches

  • Airtight glass container for storing

  • Small spoon for scooping into your storage container

  • Pour the desired amount of rolled oats into your food processor or coffee grinder.

  • Blend on HIGH for about 1 minute until you have a flour like consistency.

  • You may have to stop halfway through blending to scrape down the sides for an even finished consistency.

  • Transfer into your airtight glass container and store in a cool dry place as you would your other flours.

What can I use oat flour in?

Baking. Baking. Baking. Wait…did I say baking already. A wide variety of gluten-free baked goods use oat flour in place of regular flour. You can make cookies, crackers, cakes, bread, muffins, and pancakes using oat flour as the main ingredient. There are even some savory recipes you can use oat flour in.

What recipes are you using your homemade Oat flour in?
